Great knife, great price Jul 06, 2011
By mrsbores I've always been pleased with xacto brand knives and this is no exception. Love that this one came with 5 replacement blades - just wish it came with a cap!

If you need sharp precision type blade, this Xacto is for you. Makes quick work of paper, cuticles, taking sticky stuff off glass. Industry standard.

Basic knife--NEEDS A CAP! Apr 19, 2012
By Karith This is a very serviceable knife, but it comes without a safety cap. Everywhere you read descriptions of these things, they always come with warnings about replacing the cap as soon as you're done using the knife, for your own safety. Usually, the people giving you the warnings will tell you that X-Acto blades are merciless, and to ask them how they know. Well, I picked this up to replace my lost knife, and was sad to find that its replacement had no cap. I fashioned one with a bit of cardboard and some tape to just make a sleeve to slide over the tip, and I suggest you do the same if you buy this particular knife. It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to protect your fingers.
Otherwise, it's a basic hobby knife, with basic #11 blades. The blades are sharp, they cut well, but dull quickly if cutting paper and foamcore. And of course, I'm cutting paper, foamcore, and styrene plasticard with them! A ceramic sharpener could make your blades last a lot longer if you're cutting other materials, but many of us have long since given up trying to replace the factory edge. I personally prefer Excel blades to X-Acto, but both get the job done. You can try out Excel Super Sharp #11 Blades in a 15 pack dispenser cheaply enough that you needn't take my word for it. If you find I'm right, you'll be buying them in 100 packs.
The thing you've got to understand about razor blades is that sharpness is a two-edged blade, if you pardon the pun. A more dull blade or a shallower grind can cut and cut and cut with little or no degradation. A comparatively steep grind is a sharper blade, but also one whose edge will be utterly destroyed more quickly. X-Acto blades are "Very Sharp" by my estimation. Excel blades are "Extremely sharp". There are a couple of other blades out there I'd rate as "Look at them and they'll make you bleed Sharp", but I don't use them, can't afford them, don't need them, and Amazon doesn't sell them.
You get 6 X-Acto's with this basic and functional blade holder. I suggest you try the 15 pack of Excel blades as well. Buy the 100 pack of whichever you find works better for what and how you cut.
Remember these cutting tips: ALWAYS use a cutting mat--your blades will last longer, your lines will be straighter, and your tables won't get scratched up. When cutting lines, always use a metal straight edge that is long enough, but not too long. (I have 8", 24", and 36" myself!) Cut with cork side UP so there's no shadow and the blade tip is right up against your straight edge and your cut line. Hold your straight edge firmly and keep your knife blade up against it. And especially when cutting foamcore or styrene plasticard, remember that multiple shallow cuts are always going to be cleaner and more precise than a single deep cut.
And PUT A CAP ON YOUR KNIFE when you're not using it, even if you had to make the cap yourself.

Nice Knife Feb 09, 2012
By Speechless This little knife is lightweight and so easy to use! I was concerned with it being too small, but I was wrong. It's very sharp, so it's super simple to cut even thick things. I used it to cut carpet tiles and will use it again, I'm sure.
