A+ for ease of use, F for taste Jan 25, 2010

I've used Wilton fondant three times now, and each time it was incredibly easy to use. It takes color well, it rolls easily and it's a champ as far as holding up and not cracking or drying too quickly. So why does it get such poor reviews? TASTE! Absolutely horrible taste. When I used Wilton (the first fondant I ever tried) I thought hey, maybe I just hate fondant. I then tried Satin Ice a few weeks ago, and the difference was incredible. Satin Ice, however, is only sold at a few locations, mostly east-coast, so despite its low cost you'll pay just about as much for the fondant as you will in shipping charges. I recently discovered an alternative that takes blends the ease of use of the Wilton fondant with the taste of the Satin Ice - I made my own! It's an incredibly easy recipe with only three ingredients - marshmallows, water and confectioner's sugar. You can also add in orange or vanilla extract for added flavor. Making your own fondant is cheap, easy and it tastes very good. Recipe is easily found online (I didn't create it so I don't want to post it here). I recommend skipping the Wilton fondant and making your own!

I would use it again. Fairly easy to work with. Feb 08, 2009
By E. Jones I have completed all the Wilton cake decorating courses and I do cakes on the side. I used this rolled fondant on a wedding cake last weekend. Overall easy to work with, softens fairly quickly and rolls out nicely.
I don't mind eating it (i sorta like chewy 'stuff') but most people generally don't. You are supposed to cover the cake with a light coating of buttercream before adding fondant (make sure the buttercream is perfectly smooth; fondant will show all imperfections) and let the buttercream dry before putting fondant over it.
Of course most people prefer to flavor/color - just add cornstarch to balance out the stickyness. I don't flavor mine, just color. A really dark blue required quite a bit of color (1/2 the jar) plus cornstarch. This much cornstarch and additives make it harder to work with, it is not as supple for working it over the cake. Lighter colors work best with this rolled fondant.
I will keep using this fondant in the conveninet size packages.
The only reason i rated 4 stars instead of 5 is because there's no expire date on the package that I can find. Some other packages (NOT purchased through Amazon) had some hardness that I thought I had kneaded out, but tiny hard chunks showed up when I rolled it thin.

Don't use this item... Sep 13, 2009
By Cakecreate I make cakes and decided that it would be so much easier to just buy the fondant than to make it so I went out to purchase this product. It is so easy to work with and makes cakes come out BEAUTIFUL but the taste is HORRIBLE. It tasted like something chewy mixed with nail polish remover.
If your looking for a beautiful cake and are going to warn people to take the fondant off first, this is a good product. But don't offer to make someone a cake (especially one that they are going to pay for) and use this product. Your reputation will be shot.

THE WORST! Jul 10, 2009
By Witchercakes
"Bewitching in every bite!"
I have my own supplier for my fondant. But there was one time when I accepted a rush job and wasn't able to check that I don't have enough fondant left. So I went out to buy Wilton. I was so impressed on how easy it is to work with. So I cut my decors and colored it. As I was drying the stars, I tasted one (isn't that what good cooks are suppose to do?). I almost vomited when I tasted it. I am very sensitive to food taste and smell. The Wilton Fondant taste like rancid oil. At first I tasted the coloring and the pearl dust I used coz I thought the bad taste was coming from there (and the fact that I never thought Wilton can make such bad product). Anyway, I ended up calling my supplier and agreed to pick up the fondant just so I can get one.

I Would NEVER Serve a Cake Made With This Stuff! Mar 01, 2009
By Gayle Martin
"Author of the Luke and Jenny series of historical novels"
When I started taking the Wilton cake courses I really looked forward to taking the Fondant and Gum Paste class. And while the fondant is easy to work with and makes a beautiful cake, it is THE WORST TASTING STUFF I'VE EVER PUT IN MY MOUTH.
Cakes are meant to be eaten. And I have pride in my cakes. I want them to look good, and I expect them to TASTE GOOD! This stuff tastes so bad that I could never, in good conscience, serve a cake decorated with it to anyone. I wouldn't even give it to my dogs. IT TASTES THAT BAD!
Come on Wilton! Surely your chefs can create a fondant that people would actually want to eat.
