worked like a charm Feb 13, 2011
By Amy Matthews We've never used gum paste but wanted a special cake topper for our twins birthday cake. We colored it with food gel and sculpted strawberry shortcake figure heads for our gals bday cake. Painted the faces with the same food get.It was fun to work with (like play dough) and turned out better than we expected since we're novices. Order was filed quickly too and arrived on time. No complaints.

Great for practicing with gum paste Aug 29, 2010

We wanted to expand our ways to sculpt various things for the cakes we've been making and have seen and heard many things about using gum paste. The Wilton gum paste mix is a great, easy way to make gum paste. Follow the simple directions on the can which involve adding a measured amount of water, mixing in certain amounts of confectioner's sugar and letting it rest... adding more sugar at a prescribed time as laid out on the can. I mixed it up by hand and kneaded it by hand and it was so easy to make! It sculpts nicely and when given enough time, hardens well. We've used it now for making flowers and even sculpting an abalone shell and feathers for a cake we recently made.
It keeps for up to a week unrefrigerated and recommends refrigerating after a week and can even be frozen for long term storage. We found that even after refrigerating, it easily warmed and was able to be sculpted within minutes. We've painted (with Wilton food dyes) directly on it and it works great, especially when texture is left in, as we found out with the feathers. It does get sticky, so white shortening your surface is recommended.
Follow the directions and let your imagination run wild and you can't go wrong!

Not Very Good Feb 21, 2011
By Mira I don't like it at all. It was not easy to knead and dries to quickly. I managed to make 2 flowers and they were cracked and dried and fell apart. I threw out the whole can. I'm going to try something else.

Wilton gum paste Aug 27, 2010
By techo_junkie When I mixed up my first batch, it was hard as a rock with the recommended 1/4c of water. Any videos you see out on the web, and it's supposed to be rather messy and a bit on the soupy/dough side. This was like hard dough that had too much flour mixed in. It stuck in big chunks to the mixing paddle, and trying to knead it was all but impossible.
Skip this product and just mix up a batch from a website recipe instead - it's not worth the time, money, or aggravation you're going to encounter.
