Great kit for a Starter Dec 24, 2010
By Sharon Preiss This is a great kit for a starter in cake decorating. It provides all the absolutely necessary materials needed for the Wilton Decorating Basics class. The designs provided and the lessons make it possible to make many, many cake designs with just this one course. Highly recommended for anyone looking to get into cake design.
The only downside is after the first class in the course, and for the next three, it is recommended that many more products be purchased that are not a part of this kit. If you are looking to take a Wilton decorating class, expect to pay a minimum of $100 for the class, this kit, and necessary materials as you move along in the course. In the end though, it is absolutely worth it!

Wilton's Decorating Student Basics Kit Mar 06, 2011
By Maria G. O' Great Kit. You could actually follow the book and teach yourself without a teacher, because it is clear and tells you exactly what you need and what to do.

Standard Student Kit Jan 10, 2011
By A I was a little concerned about buying this version of the kit, because the product doesn't show a picture of the box like another version being sold on Amazon, which I thought was odd. But I received the basic kit and it's exactly the same as the one sold in stores (for a little more). This is the kit used in Wilton's basic cake decorating class. On a side note, if you're serious about decorating, there are two other mega or ultimate kits you could buy which have most or all of the tools needed for all three (or four) decorating courses for about the same price (on discount) or a little more.

Great starter, but you need more May 06, 2012
By ZenCity This is a great starter kit for the Wilton Decorating Basics Class or for teaching yourself. Whichever way you decide go, you will need additional materials. First you need the book, Wilton Decorating Basics Lesson Plan In some of the classes they give you the book as part of the class, others don't. In the book, it specifies other items needed to complete the class and gives you the recipe for the basic icing recipe you will use throughout. It is also recommended to buy the following: Cake boards, turntable, cake lifter, angled spatula, silicone tip covers, waxed paper flower squares, flower lifter, plastic cups, scissors, glue stick, squeeze bottle, wilton meringue powder, wilton gel icing colors, wilton clear flavoring in imitation butter, almond or vanilla and various household items for baking or cleaning up.
A couple of items I would recommend are the tip brush for cleaning the tips and a mesh bag for bundling them up to put in the dishwasher. If you are taking the class, you should also consider a hard case for the tips. Wilton makes one that will accomodate all but the largest two tips in the kit, and you'll still have room to add others if you like. If you don't want to buy their case, find something hard sided to store or transport them in so you don't crush them. Amazon has a great price on the kits and they are almost always in stock, unlike the local craft stores. I could have purchased the kit at Hobby Lobby for $32.99. Using their 40% off coupon I would have been able to get it for about the same as I paid on Amazon ($21.87), if they had any in stock. When the classes start, the supplies dry up fast at the stores.
If you are out to teach yourself, definitely buy the book first or at the same time as the kit. I do believe you could teach yourself, but I prefer the classes because you can get immediate feedback on your technique. Also, for the novice or first time baker, this is great because you get introduced to some basic baking techniques at the same time as learning to decorate. My final recommendation is to take the practice templates that are in the basic kit and laminate them. You have a practice board with a cover to put over the paper templates but it won't protect them from a spill or wear and tear. Once laminated, you can use them even without the practice board if you like. Wilton Flowers and Cake Design is course two in the four course series amd follows Decorating Basics.

Has everything you need! Jun 13, 2011
By Julie I got this kit because I signed up for the class with my mom and my sister. This kit has been great not just for the class, but baking at home. It comes with a few featherweight bags and a few disposable bags. It also comes with a few couplers and 12 tips, everything you need to start making cakes. If you look in the store, these items are quite expensive to buy alone, making $35 for a little bit of everything a great deal. You can also try everything and figure out what you like best, and what you should buy more of. These kits are great. I think I'm going to purchase the fondant one because it also comes with the tools you need to become a beginner baker.
