1Not good for prismacolor standards.  Jun 01, 2009
By Kurtus A. Sietz
This sharpener gives you a very nice sharpen, however the inside gets clogged CONSTANTLY even when you remove it from the black container the sharpener is clogged after only a few twists and I am constantly digging the shavings out with my XACTO knife because they are wedged inside. I would prefer to have a standalone sharpener without the black container so that the shavings dont get stuck. I love prismacolor but this sharpener is flawed.

5Excellent for Prismacolor Premier Softcore and Premier Verithin!  Nov 19, 2010
By RAE Multimedia
I am puzzled by the reviews that suggest the Prismacolor Oval Pencil Sharpener gets clogged or filled quickly, which simply is not what happens . . .

The photograph of the sharpener makes it look small, but it actually is 4 inches long, with each half being approximately 2 inches long, where one half is the cap and the other half is a metal sharpener with a holding area for the shavings . . .

(1) The sharpener is larger than it appears in the photograph . . .

(2) It does not clog or fill after you sharpen a few Primscolor Premier Softcore or Premier Verithin color pencils . . .

My thinking on this is that whatever problems people might be having mostly are due either (a) to not knowing how to sharpen these types of drawing pencil or (b) to needing to do some type of special sharpening that essentially "eats" about one-third of a pencil . . .

[NOTE: The Prismacolor Premier Verithin color pencils are not sharpened, so they need to be sharpened before first use, and this is best done with the small metal pencil sharpener that does not have a reservoir for the shaving, so for this particular uses (the first sharpening of a new set of unsharpened pencils), the reservoir will fill more quickly, but I do not use the Prismacolor Oval Pencil Sharpener this way. Instead, it is use for resharpening the pencils, which is an entirely different type of sharpening procedure . . . ]

This is the type of pencil sharpener I use for the first sharpening of new color pencils:

Maped Classic 1-Hole Metal Pencil Sharpeners, Grey, 2-Pack (006602)

But once the color pencils are sharpened, the Prismacolor Oval Pencil Sharpener is excellent for resharpening without wasting a lot of the lead . . .

For reference, until I actually took a bit of time to do research on professional drawing pencils, my entire experience using and sharpening pencils was based on the graphite pencils one uses in school, typically with a rotating handle type of pencil sharpener or an electric pencil sharpener, both of which definitely will "eat" a professional color drawing pencil very quickly . . .

However, in doing my research on professional drawing pencils I found a rather detailed treatise on sharpening these types of pencils, and I studied it for a while with the result that I realized the rules are very different, in part because these pencils are not inexpensive, and while it might be fine to "eat" a 10 cent pencil in a pencil sharpener, it is not so fine to "eat" a 50 cent or 1 dollar pencil . . .

More specifically, the general strategy is to remove only the wood casing but not the color lead, and there is a way to do this with a small rectangular metal pencil sharpener that costs about $1 (see above), which is great if you have outstanding hand and eye coordination and have nothing better to do than to sharpen pencils . . .

However, for older folks sometimes it is easier to have a way to sharpen these pencils without needing to understand all the subtle nuances and rules for sharpening professional drawing pencils (in particular Prismacolor Premier Softcore and Premier Verithin color pencils), which is the case here, since in this particular instance I am not the person doing the drawing, but instead am the person selecting the art media, equipment, and doing most of the pencil sharpening . . .

In other words, I ordered the Prismacolor Oval Pencil Sharpener for the artist to use when I am not handy to do the pencil sharpening, and I am quite pleased with this particular pencil sharpener, because after giving it a quick test, it works extraordinarily well and actually does a better job than I can do with the tiny metal pencil sharpeners . . .

So, I am ordering one for me to use when I am the artist rather than the peasant who sharpens the pencils most of the time . . .

The reservoir for pencil shavings is sufficient for a good bit of pencil sharpening, with my current estimate being perhaps 10 to 15 sharpens without needing to empty the reservoir--when the person doing the sharpening knows how to sharpen these types of pencils without wasting valuable lead and emptying the bank account . . .

Another key part of the strategy is to use the Prismacolor Premier Verithin color pencils for the thin and fine lines, since they have harder leads, but to use the Prismacolor Premier Softcore color pencils for medium stuff, while for larger stuff one uses the Premier Art Stix, where all the colors match and so forth, which makes this an outstanding color drawing pencil system . . .

Summarizing, while there might be certain types of drawing styles that require the color pencils to be sharpened in a way that essentially wastes a lot of the pencil, my general perspective is that the Prismacolor Oval Pencil Sharpener is outstanding for sharpening Prismacolor Premier Softcore and Premier Verithin color pencils in the most optimal way that makes it possible to use as much of the lead as possible, which ultimately saves money, since another fact of the matter which is becoming more apparent is that someone who draws frequently is going to use a LOT of drawing pencils, so the general idea is to avoid wasting the pencils by sharpening them incorrectly or needlessly, which as best as I can determine is a matter both (a) of sharpening technique and (b) of using the proper pencil for whatever one is doing, where putting a fine point on a Prismacolor Premier Softcore pencil basically wastes a lot of the pencil and is better done by using a Prismacolor Premier Verithin color pencil instead, as is using a Prismacolor Premier Art Stix "square crayon shaped" lead for bigger stuff, which is fabulous . . .

Fabulous!

2Okay for emergency on-the-go, but...  Apr 19, 2010
By makingartwork.ca "makingartwork"
It surprises me that Prismacolor would put their name on this. If you look closely on the metal sharpener within the plastic case, it's just a regular sharpener that you can get at any office supply store. I purchased this at the major art supply retailer where I normally buy my PrismaColors.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong here (I've only been sharpening pencils since I was about 3 years old, and now I'm 39), but I find it a horrible pencil sharpener. The wood surrounding the 'lead' usually gets mashed and splintered. More often than not, the lead breaks off just beneath the wood. The bevel is too steep and short. There is not enough lead exposed after sharpening. The sharpener gets clogged with every use. The shavings reservoir gets full much too soon. It is much too expensive for what you get.

I've wasted too many precious millimeters of pencil using this sharpener. I only use it when I'm doing demos at my art shows. I much prefer using an electric sharpener, but end up using this one in emergencies. I'm looking for a good travel sharpener.

5How to Sharpen Your Prismacolor Pencils  Apr 28, 2011
By Ginny Mapes "Pacific Northwest writer & educator"
The Prismacolor pencils that are made in Mexico now are very soft leaded. You have to be extremely careful how you sharpen those pencils or the colored material will start breaking apart. Never use an automatic pencil sharpener, the prismacolors will be ground down in an instant. This hand sharpener works very well--but always use a delicate touch.

5Great product  Sep 12, 2009
By Patricia M. Curry
These sharpeners are better than the average ones. The do not break off the pencil and the lead is equal around once sharpened.
