Lightfast and Oil-based Sep 14, 2011
By Corsair Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils are one of the best lines of colored pencil. They are oil-based, so do not suffer from wax bloom, but they tend to be a little harder than wax-based pencils. Their quality control is excellent, with virtually no warped barrels or off-center leads, and do not suffer from lead breakage while sharpening (though I suppose if you have a bad sharpener, you can break anything). They can hold a fairly fine point, and don't suffer from excessive crumbling. Their translucency is advantageous for layering colors, less so for opaque effects.
Lightfastness is excellent, with each pencil being marked on a three-star scale. *** pencils are claimed to be lightfast for a minimum of 100 years (fully 100 of the 120 colors they offer have this rating), ** for 25 years. There's only three * star in the entire line (none in this set), and only two ** star in this particular set. If you want your art to last rather than for reproduction only and then hidden away in a folder, this is an important consideration. In comparison, while the Sanford Prismacolor Premiere set of 48 pencils looks like more for less money, be aware that fully a third of the pencils in that set are less lightfast than the worst Polychromos, and numerous others would only rate one star. You get what you pay for, and higher quality materials are often worth the price.
This particular set of 36 gives a good range of colors and is enough to get you going for the most part. I supplemented locally from open stock (single pencils) with a dark green and several flesh tones (European egocentricity on the use of "flesh"), which the set lacked. The 60 color set partially addresses this, but remember that layering for the color you want is the order of the day with colored pencils.

Great for artwork and illustrations Nov 26, 2011
By Anonymous I purchased these for an artist in my family and they love them. They blend very well. No waxy buildup when layering.

These Pencils Are Wonderful Feb 04, 2013
By Steve M. I bought these pencils for a drawing I wanted to make of a sculpture of a tower my sister made in high school. These pencils are bright and beautiful, and of the highest quality. I originally was planning to get Prismacolor, as I have used those for years. But after reading the reviews on them it seemed that the quality had suffered since I got my last set years ago. So I looked further until I found these. I was impressed with the fact that they were so highly praised and got such high ratings, so I got them. I love them, and would get them again. I highly recommend these pencils.
The perfect colored pencil May 19, 2013
By B-Schippa Hard enough to hold a sharp point yet Soft enough to fill a lot of space quick Able to go from the lightest value to more saturated tone Only regret? Had I known I would like them so much I would have ordered more colors, but that's where blending and layering comes in. Love Faber Castell products......
Extraordinary Performance Mar 05, 2013
By Jon Linden I had been using LYRA Rembrandt pencils previously. The 600 series of those pencils are extraordinary and are a wonderful product. However, recently they have discontinued this line and thus I was forced to find a replacement product. After an exhaustive search, I decided to try the Faber-Castell POLYCHROMOS pencils. These are also oil based colored pencils and are absolutely as excellent as the former LYRA Rembrandt 600 series product. They draw smoothly and give a truly fabulous rendering with a perfect sheen as would be expected from an oil based pencil product. They are easy to sharpen, hold a sharp edge and truly give everything an artist or draftsman would be looking for in a fine artist grade colored pencil set. The color assortment in this 36 color set is a wonderful selection of the entire line and should be sufficient for everything except the most demanding color usage. In addition, the pencils allow the artist to blend 2 or more colors to get a different color which allows the artist to get precisely the color they need, even if it is not one of those in the set.
I highly recommend this set and would put them up against any other oil based Artist Color Pencil set on the market anywhere. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed in the quality of the renderings that are possible with these pencils. Any artist I believe will be more than satisfied with the results they get from this line of oil based colored pencils. Do not be hesitant to give them a try.
