These thin sanding sponges are my favorite for sanding small projects. They offer the ability to wrap around spindles and other thing sections of wood that the thicker sanding sponges can't; plus are easier to use than regular paper-backed sandpaper.

I used to buy them at our local home improvement center and also used to find them at craft stores. For some reason, I haven't been able to find them locally anymore. After ordering from Amazon, they arrived much faster than anticipated.
