I was surprised by how easy it was to use the beveled mat cutter. My first two projects turned out very well. I think it is well worth the $50. Just think of all the custom framing expenses you'll avoid! However, it would also be useful to have a mat-cutting board to put under the mats while cutting. (I used a cardboard box.)

I've owned this mat cutting kit for several years (at least 7 or 8), and have used it countless times for gifts and to frame items around my own home. It's pretty easy to get the hang of it (and there are plenty of practice mat boards). For larger items (e.g. poster size), though, this might be more difficult to use because the ruler/bar is only about 24" long, and it could be a little tougher to get a straight cut for lengths over 24".
As some other reviewers have mentioned, you will likely want to use some sort of cutting board underneath. I have a self-healing cutting mat that is meant for quilting, so I've used that without any problems. When I first cut mats, I put cardboard underneath, but found that the blade was tougher to control.

Met my needs! Needed a kit for a simple project for a beginner. Framing my grandchildren's "first pictures". Not quite done but it is looking good!
