Brushless Starter Manga Marker Set Sep 20, 2011
By W

These markers are a "professional" quality set at a low price, which is really the biggest selling point of this set. However, beware of the use of "Manga" as part of the label. These are not brush tip and although this is a nice set of markers, it can not possibly cover everything you can believe to be "Manga" with just 12 colors.
Now, to be fair the product description reads: "Double-ended markers with both broad and fine nibs". These are obviously not brush tip markers. However, for some reason, when I read "Manga" as part of the label, I thought they were brush tip markers. Even then, I thought it was a good set of colored markers for a good prices, so I decided to keep them anyway.
As the description of this product mentions, "Manga" refers to the range of colors available in this set. However, how much of a range do you have with only 12 markers? You have your three primary and three secondary: PM1 Process Red, PM 17 Sunburst Yellow, PM39 True Blue, PM14 Pale Vermillion, PM167 Apple Green, and PM171 Lilac. You have three more for flesh tones: PM72 Eggshell, PM70 Brick Beige, and PM208 Ballet Pink. One for shadows: PM156 French Gray 20%. And two for backgrounds: PM95 Sienna Brown, and PM144 Cloud Blue.
Of course, you can get really be creative with this set of colors and use them however you want. For example: Use Brown, Vermillion and Yellow for flesh tones, or Cloud Blue for eye color. These markers are very good for layering and if you are able to blend them then you range of colors will go up quite a bit, but that would mean you are already good at using markers.
I think this is an OK starter set of markers for artist who has some experience with markers. I wouldn't advertise them for beginners, but it would be the next step to go if you already dabble with cheaper markers. I started with PITT Artists Brush Pen Set- MANGA Set of Six Colors. I recommend these if you get them on sale, as I once did. However, other color sets may be harder to find, which is a problem I find with this brand.

Definitely get this collection of markers for any kind of portrait work. The flesh tones are just right and they produce a nice flat color. Super high quality set!

I ordered this set for my son who is into Anime and creating his own characters. The colors in this set are vibrant and true to color. He was amazed at how easy the colors flow out of the pen and the ease at which he could fill in color. They don't smudge or run. I would definitely purchase these again!
