Best masker out there! Feb 03, 2011
By tooltoy I have had and used many masking over the years, Most to big and bulky. all the others the tape would fall off the tape reels. But this little machine is light weight and easy to move around in a small shop. I read the other review listed here about the assembly problems on this machine and it made me want to wright this review. I can only guess that the people that wrote that review have no ability to read or even look at the pictures. When writing a review you should have at least the ability to determine if there is a problem with the product or THAT YOU SHOULD BE THE STAR CONTESTANT ON THE TV SHOW "ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5 GRADER" I thing this is a fair product for the price and thats over 30 years of experience speaking Thank you for reading my review!
Astro Masking Machine Nov 02, 2012
By Larry Great machine for the money. Works very well. The tension spring that holds the paper against the cutoff is sometimes a little funky. It could be a little heavier. I'll probably replace it one of these days with one a little more beefy.
Additionally, I'd like to see the frame made out of heavier material and be more stable. It seems kind of light, but all things considered, for the money, I can't complain. I'd buy it again.
good masking machine with a little tune up Jun 22, 2012
By Shane M. Maberry I recieved this as a gift from my wishlist. It's a pretty standard masking machine. Overall, I really like having it around. I'm not sure why someone would refuse to use it as one of the other reviewers stated. Basically, It is just a paper and tape dispenser. It works perfectly if you line up the tape feed and secure the paper in one position. I'm using a 18" roll of paper on the top and two smaller rolls on the bottom. This unit comes with springs to hold tension againt the paper rolls (on the ends part mm18-b16), but they are not needed and will not fit easily with a full 18" roll. The Long springs (part mm18-b17) are also not needed and do not have a place to mount. They are good spares for the springs on the cutting blades.
I agree that the quality of construction isn't stellar, but It is nearly identical to the 20 year old machine sitting next to it in the body shop.
pros: Priced low. Works perfectly once setup and tuned.
cons:
Required some adjustment and 'tuning' :
#1 the metal spacers that the tape holders roll on are too long (this is in part mm18-b08 in the parts diagram) . This will cause the tape to not align properly on the paper. I pushed them through the plastic tape reels and marked a line flush with the tape holder width. Then I proceeded to use a bench grinder to shorten the spacers. This made the tape have no side to side end play and corrected the only major flaw with the construction. I spent less than 15 minutes shortening all four of the metal spacers.
#2 the wing screws/ thumb screws on the plastic paper adjusting collars (part mm18-b06)interfere with the paper roll (with an 18" roll) I used them anyway, but will replace them with normal machine screws in the future.
#3 as stated earlier the springs are not needed and wont fit if you are using a 18" roll of paper.
#4 assembly is required and the instructions aren't the best (However, they are far easier to follow than ikea assembly instructions)
#5 there aren't basic instructions for adjusting and using the machine. (I found it pretty self evident, but from reading the complaints of others - they are probably needed)
In spite of the list above, The machine works flawlessly once you understand how to align and use it. I've been using it for a few weeks (daily) now and it is works perfectly. It's a lot easier than putting the paper on by hand.
If you are using a masking machine and painting things you should have the basic mechanical abilities to tune up and assemble the masking machine.
be ready to modify Dec 18, 2011
By tim Be ready to to modify this product if you buy it. The holes on one leg were drilled wrong so the leg was crooked, and since the leg was crooked the tape holders are crooked also. There were no instructions. I had to go online and look at pictures of other peoples paper machines to see how to put this together. The paper roll stops stripped the first time I threaded the screw. I trashed all of them. I had to make custom spacers to put the right tension on the paper rolls to work correctly. I finially have it tuned in, but I dread the day I have to switch out the paper.
