the optimal size for calligraphy on 8.5 x 11 Jul 04, 2011
By tobywan I bought the larger size of this light box, then bought this size for use away from home. If, like me, you are using this product for calligraphy, or other work, on media sizes up to U. S. letter (8.5 x 11 inch) size, then this is the perfect product for it. Do not buy the larger size unless you need larger than 8.5 x 11 paper. A piece of U. S. bond paper will fit just within the case of this 6x9 box, with just enough space to tape down a template of that size, for instance, and the lighted area will illuminate a work area within the 8.5 x 11 paper with margins of 1.25 inches left and right, and 1" top to bottom. This box is the one perfect size for what I'm doing. But both light boxes work goooooood!!! The light is strong enough to get through my guideline sheet and my work sheet, no problem, using either Clairefontaine or Rhodia papers--two sheets, clear as you could hope, no problem. It does the trick for me.

I have an older floresent light box. This lightpad is easer to use, easer on my eyes , its slim profile eases arm/hand fatigue. All around great product ! Worth the money !

I am not sure how to feel about this purchase. Feb 28, 2012
By G. Lee
"Addicted shopper"
I am giving this product 4 stars because of mixed feelings after getting it.
Frugal side of me tells me that I can't touch a good "photography" light box to view film at this price. The stingy side tells me but this is for tracing drawings, how hard can that be?
Fashionable side of me says this has really nice brushed aluminum frames. The practical side tells me it's those cheap quality assembly that the panels don't even fit snugly (the gaps between the pad surface and the borders are all uneven).
Appreciating side of me says this is a pretty cool LED illumination that's instantly on and lights up the surface evenly, the critical side noticed that when I shake it hard left to right something moves inside.
Other than that, I have it on for an hour straight and it is still working with no hot spots like some others mentioned. I guess you would really notice something like that if you were copying but just for viewing I think it's fine. The back of the panel also shows minor tarnishing on the aluminum. My conclusion is I will live with it. It works and does what I need, I am not looking to show off this like an iPad, and it's not too expensive.
Great little box! May 24, 2012
By Felisha I adore this box! It's very slim and a nice weight, not too heavy but not light enough to where you feel like you bought it at the dollar store. The case is soft and fits this thing like a glove, which was really a selling point for me because I plan to use this for hand drawn animations and will be toting it from home to the studio. It comes with everything shown and is a very sophisticated-looking tool. I tested it with three layers of computer paper, bristol board, (inexpensive) watercolor paper with ink, watercolors, and pencil and I could see everything just fine irregardless of overhead lighting. The light on the box itself is nice and cleanly bright without hurting your eyes. A wonderful product that I strongly recommend. I have yet to test it over a long period of use, but I have high hopes for it. I only wish it had a built-in battery that you can charge while plugged in, like a cell phone!
lighting for machine vision Mar 09, 2012
By Ulrich Stern I use this as lighting for machine vision (tracking fruit flies). Works quite well and seems a good value.
I wanted to do the experiments at the minimum possible light intensity that still gives me good videos, so I spent a little time looking into how to dim the LightPad. (The power supply of the A920 provides 12V, and I measured 0.3A.) Here the two options I tried: * Super Bright LEDs' LDP-2A dimmer: about $10 and uses PWM at about 1.1kHz. The dimming works well. No flickering for human eyes (not surprising for 1.1kHz PWM), but some in the videos I recorded. * serial resistor, which required soldering and some experimenting but gives me flicker-free videos. E.g., 560 Ohm reduces the current to 7.6mA (about 2.5% of the original 0.3A), which is sufficient for my cameras.
