Works well. Takes a bit of skill to apply Jan 27, 2012

My previous experience with door edge guards is with plastic U-channels that slide into position on the edge of a car door. Those work well, but are highly visible (ugly.)
This product is more like a thick semi-sticky plastic tape. It isn't all that hard to apply properly, but does require SOME skill. My first mistake was in only cleaning the outside of the car door beforehand. Since the tape is intended to fold over and also stick on the inside edge of the door, that too must be well cleaned beforehand. Once that was done, my results were excellent, in a total time of under 10 minutes. If you look very carefully from a few feet away the tape is barely visible - further away, it's entirely unnoticeable to me. Good to know my car doors are now invisibly protected.
Other pointers: 1) don't install over a sharp bend in the door. The tape is forgiving of minor changes in direction, but has nowhere to go in a 90 degree bend. I solved that by starting below that bend, which is fine as the tape still covers anything that might hit another object as the door opens. 2) If you need to shorten the tape (as I did), you may find it easiest to cut at a 45 degree diagonal from both directions, and then finish with a 90 cut between the diagonals - in other words, in the shape of 3 sides of a stop sign. That more easily approximates the rounded edge of the original tape. 3) If you care about existing nicks in the door edge, fix those first. As my 2002 Prius is a decade old this month, I didn't bother.
Finally, if your car has 4 doors, you'll need two of these kits.
Easy to apply, stays in place. May 18, 2012
By Thistle I applied the 3M Door Edge Protection Film to the edges of my car doors, and found it very easy to apply. I was concerned about how they would look but they are virtually invisible unless you're just inches away. So far they are staying in place and not peeling or falling off. I guess the only way to truly test them would be to bang my car door on other cars and walls, but I'll skip that part of the test.

These are easy to use. We applied them to my Vintage Lincoln sedan. It is black in color, and these work perfectly. They've already prevented at least one door from chipped paint along the edge.

I was excited about this product, but after receiving and applying, it is not what I expected.
I am used to door guards that prevent your car from denting other vehicles. My Hyundai Sonata put a few dents in our Sienna minivan with its wide opening doors, and I wanted protection for my Sienna. This film does not provide that protection. I will still dent my Sienna if i am not careful, as this film is very thin and doesn't really dampen the denting action of your car door. I am used to thicker (but also more visible) door guards that slip on to the edge of the door to prevent damage to the edge of your door (and other vehicles).
The only scenario under which this product seems helpful is if you are constantly scraping your door against a concrete wall in a parking lot or something like that. Disclaimer, I'll admit, is that i haven't done the torture test on our Sienna minivan. It may in fact, reduce the damage to the Sienna. But my impression is that it is far less protective than a (thicker) rubber door edging would be.
Thin, but sticks well. Mar 06, 2012
By D. C. Eaton I ordered this not knowing that application requires a temperature of at least 55F. So I had to wait a few weeks to apply. It is a very thin material so time will tell if it provides any protection. Only 4 stars because it is so thin.
3/6/12 Today is warm enough, so I washed the door edge with soap, rinsed and dried. Oh oh! I discovered that the inner door edge on my Honda is ridged. The ridged material is a slightly rubbery material that has been painted over to match the vehicle color. This may make it harder to stick. However, application was fairly easy - the hard part is getting exactly half on the outer door edge and half on the inner. I did not get it as even as I planned, but it is clear so slight unevenness is not noticeable. Well, despite the ridged inner door edge the film did stick. Will it stick long term? Will it provide any protection? I will try to update in a few weeks.
3/22/12 Even though the inner door edge of my Honda is ridged, the 3M film is still sticking. I haven't bumped the door edge yet so I still don't know how much protection it provides.
